WebP's compression is generally more efficient than JPG's, meaning it can hold a comparable amount of visual detail in a smaller file. This is why it's our default format when you don't pick one manually.
Supports transparency, unlike JPG
WebP can store a transparent background the same way PNG does, but usually at a fraction of the file size. That makes it a good middle ground when you need transparency but PNG is too heavy.
Supported everywhere that matters
Every major browser has supported WebP for years. The one place it can still cause friction is older desktop software that expects a JPG or PNG file specifically, in which case switch formats under Advanced options.

Does WebP support transparency like PNG?+
Yes. WebP supports full transparency, and typically produces a smaller file than an equivalent transparent PNG.
Can every app open a WebP file?+
Nearly all modern browsers, phones, and apps do. A small number of older desktop programs don't, if you run into that, re-export as JPG under Advanced options.
