Do I even need to compress a photo down to 1 MB?+
A modern phone photo is often 3 to 8 MB straight out of the camera, so 1 MB is a real reduction, but at that size we can almost always keep the original resolution and quality high enough that the difference is hard to spot.
Is WebP safe to use for a 1 MB target?+
Yes. At 1 MB there's enough room that WebP, JPG, and PNG all tend to look close to identical. Automatic mode will pick WebP for the smallest file at that quality.
