Best for screenshots, text, and flat graphics
PNG is lossless around hard edges, so text, UI screenshots, icons, and diagrams stay crisp. Photos compress far less efficiently as PNG than as JPG or WebP, since PNG isn't built for smooth gradients.
Keeps transparency
If your image has a transparent background, like a logo meant to sit on top of other content, PNG is the format to keep that transparency intact. Converting to JPG would fill it in with a solid color.
Larger files than JPG or WebP
PNG has no true 'quality' setting because it doesn't lose detail. To hit a size target on a PNG, we reduce its resolution instead, which is different from how JPG and WebP compress.
Questions about compressing PNG
Why can't I just lower the quality of a PNG?+
PNG is a lossless format, it doesn't have a quality slider the way JPG does. To make a PNG smaller, the compressor reduces its resolution rather than degrading pixel detail.
Will my PNG's transparent background survive compression?+
Yes. Transparency is preserved as long as the file stays a PNG. It's only lost if you switch the output to JPG, which doesn't support transparency at all.
My PNG is huge, what's my other option?+
If the image doesn't need transparency and is a photo rather than a screenshot or graphic, switching to WebP or JPG under Advanced options will usually shrink it dramatically further.
