Why phone photos need compressing

Messaging apps re-compress anyway
WhatsApp, Telegram, and most messaging apps automatically re-compress large photos before sending, often more aggressively than you'd choose yourself. Compressing first gives you control over how much detail is kept.
Portraits and landscapes compress differently
A portrait with skin tones and soft backgrounds tolerates compression well. A detailed landscape or a photo with fine texture, like foliage or fabric, shows compression artifacts sooner, so it may need a higher target to look clean.
